Catalin Buiu was born on June 27, 1968. He has studied control engineering at the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, Politehnica University of Bucharest, where he received a Diploma degree in 1992. Immediately after graduation, he was hired as a Research Assistant at the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering. He received the Ph.D. degree from the same University in 1997 with a dissertation on Intelligent Techniques for Autonomous Control Systems and a second doctorate in Natural Sciences (Biology) from the University of Bucharest in 2014.

Since October 2004, he holds a position as Professor in the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers at the Politehnica University, where he teaches Modeling and Simulation, Modeling of Biological Systems,  Algorithms un Bioinformatics, and Robotics and Virtual Reality  at undergraduate level, and Cognitive Robotics and Multi-Agent Systems at Master level.

His research interests include cognitive and emotional robotics, natural computing, computational biology, and educational technologies. He is the founder and Head of the Laboratory of Natural Computing and Robotics. He also supervises quality undergraduate student projects, master and Ph.D. theses. He is a member of IEEE, ACM, and Biochemical Society. He is a member of IEEE Technical Committee on Safety, Security, and Rescue Robotics, and of the IFAC Technical Committee on Intelligent Autonomous Vehicles.

He regularly serves as IPC member for international conferences in his fields of interest.
